Summer Space scheme 2019

Blasting off on 22 July, Space provides fun, positive activities throughout the school summer holiday and gives young people across the county the opportunity to build their confidence, develop life skills, improve their health and general wellbeing.

Space 2019 is now in its fifth year since its relaunch by Matthew Ellis, Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire and Rescue and Crime. Space was originally an activities scheme led by police in Staffordshire aimed at engaging young people before it stopped in the 1990s. The new version of Space, coordinated by the Staffordshire Commissioner’s office, is planned and delivered by a wider collaboration of public and voluntary organisations, including the Police. Delays to Kidsgrove Station improvements

Kidsgrove Station june 2019 copy low resFunding for the car park extension at Kidsgrove Station could be lost and work on the new lifts and footbridge have been delayed due to the discovery of old mines.

Work started in November and was due to be completed late spring 2019 but the project has now stalled and funding could be lost.

Doctors Practice at Kidsgrove Medical Centre is “inadequate”

 

Kidsgrove Medical centre copyA report by the Care Quality Commission has found one of the practices operating out of Kidsgrove Medical Centre on Mount Road to be inadequate.

The practice, Dr Robinson & Partners, have been placed in special measures and will be inspected again in six months, if insufficient improvements are made the providers could have their registration cancelled leading to a closure of the service.

Speed humps for Colclough Lane

colclough_lane_A___consultationStoke City council are to install a set of speed humps along Colclough Lane/Birchenwood Road between Goldenhill and Newchapel to slow down traffic on what has been become a ‘Rat Run’.

The country lane is narrow with some sharp bends and needs to be driven with care but many drivers using as it as a short cut avoiding the busier Tunstall Road, Biddulph Road, James Brindley Way route often exceed the 30mph speed limit and a number of accidents have resulted in the last few years. Lidl submit plans for Kidsgrove store

Lidl UK have submitted a planning application to bring a new store to Kidsgrove, on land just off Liverpool Road.

If approved the plans willsee the site currently used by Kidsgrove Working Men’s Club, and also home to The Canal Tavern, redeveloped into a new Lidl supermarket.

The Working Mens Club, which was founded in 1945 and in its heyday had over 800 members, would relocate to a new site on Meadows Road, close to the railway station in the town centre. Although The Canal Tavern would lose an area of land as part of the proposals, the pub itself would be retained while gaining from the additional footfall to the store and the overall regeneration of the site. Work on station upgrade starts

Kidsgrove Station feb 2019 copyWork is underway to install new lifts and a footbridge at Kidsgrove station to ensure it’s accessible for everyone by spring 2019.

Network Rail has started work on the £5 million Kidsgrove ‘Access for All’ upgrade, which will transform the way passengers with all mobility needs use the railway. The vital upgrade will install three new lifts at either side of platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4, as well as a brand new footbridge linking the platforms.

Campaigners have been calling for improvements to access for nearly 20 years as the only step-free access is to the Manchester-to-Stoke platform (1). [Read more…]

Persimmon plans development of 69 homes on site in Butt Lane

West Avenue copyProperty developer Persimmon are proposing to develop a site formerly occupied by Celestica in West Avenue, Butt Lane.

The site is currently identified as employment land, but hasn’t been occupied by a business for many years.

The proposals is not yet at the planning aplication stage and Persimmon are asking residents for their views before taking it further. A spokesman for Persimmon Homes North West said: “We are currently preparing a full planning application on a parcel of land to the north of West Avenue in Kidsgrove. [Read more…]

Cabinet approves support to reopen Kidsgrove Sports Centre

Sports Centre dec reducedPlans to reopen part of Kidsgrove sports centre under a community management model have taken another positive step forward.

The Council’s Cabinet have agreed to make a one-off capital contribution of £300,000 towards a significant refurbishment programme that includes improvements to dated “dry side” facilities at the sports centre.

The Borough Council and Staffordshire County Council are working with Kidsgrove Sports Centre Community Group, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), to develop viable proposals for volunteers to reopen the sports centre. Both councils signed a Memorandum of Understanding in February this year agreeing to work together to support the group in their goal until aspirations to replace the building with a new leisure centre in the long-term are achieved.

The draft refurbishment plans, involving an initial budget of £700,000, feature improvements to the reception, gym, aerobics studio, changing rooms and a new sports hall roof. The sports centre, managed by the borough council, closed in June 2017 when the joint use agreement for its management came to an end. [Read more…]

Recycling review could be costly for gardeners

Brown Bin low resFollowing a review of the current recycling services the council are considering implementing a new twin stream service for kerbside recycling, and to bring in charges for garden waste.

A public consultation was carried out by the Borough Council following a series of issues and problems including large numbers of missed collections. It revealed that 58 per cent were not happy with the current service. Most who responded are happy with the frequency of collections but least satisfied with the type and range of containers. There was also a preference to use wheelie bins for recycling. [Read more…]
