Lidl get go ahead for Kidsgrove store

lidl cgi aug 2019 reduced sizeNewcastle-Under-Lyme Borough Council reached a decision on Lidl GB’s planning application to bring a new Lidl store to Kidsgrove (on the site currently occupied by Kidsgrove Working Men’s Club), as well as a second, accompanying planning application to relocate the Club to new premises on Meadows Road, Kidsgrove.

Both applications were unanimously approved by members of the Planning Committee. The Working Mens Club, which was founded in 1945 and in its heyday had over 800 members, will relocate to a new site on Meadows Road, close to the railway station in the town centre. Although The Canal Tavern will lose an area of land as part of the proposals, the pub itself will be retained while gaining from the additional footfall to the store and the overall regeneration of the site.

The store could create up to 40 new full and part-time jobs for local people and would include a dedicated in-store bakery, longer style tills with dual packing, a customer toilet, baby changing, and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.

Dominic Bryan, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said: “We’re delighted with the Planning Committee’s decision to unanimously approve our plans for a new Lidl store in Kidsgrove, as well as the proposals to relocate Kidsgrove Working Men’s Club to a much-needed new home on Meadows Road.

“The store, which will be built on the site currently occupied by the Club, will create up to 40 new full and part-time jobs for local people and provide those living close by with more shopping choice and convenience. The relocation of the Club will help to secure its long-term future, as its owners have been looking to move for some time.

“Throughout the planning process, both planning applications enjoyed incredible support from the local community and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for supporting us.

“We would like to make a start on the Lidl store as soon as possible and are hopeful of a Winter 2020 opening.”
