Sports Centre on track for spring opening

It’s been a really busy time for the Trustees planning the reopening of Kidsgrove Sports Centre.

We are still awaiting a handover date from the contractor, however given the progress, we are fairly confident there won’t be too long to wait now.

We have been really busy ensuring that the centre will be operationally ready to open. This includes; recruitment of the centre manager, Crowdfunding to help equip the centre, arranging the supply of gym equipment, conversing with sporting bodies and organisations; finalising booking systems and marketing, just to mention a few of the tasks being undertaken. It has certainly been a hectic period. All of the Trustees share the desire of our community to get the centre reopened as soon as possible.

Dementia Action Week will be held from 16th to 22nd May, the week is a national event led by Alzheimer’s Society.

During this week, we encourage everyone to think about ways in which they can support people affected by dementia and their carers.

Alsager became a Dementia Friendly Community in 2017 and each year we invite businesses in the town to display our blue and yellow bunting, so look out for it this May and think about some small thing that you might do to support someone with dementia.

Maybe you would like to become a dementia friend and join over 3,500 dementia friends in our area? Details below.

This year the theme is Diagnosis and it is really important to seek advice if you have any concerns about your memory. There is a lot of support available for anyone who receives a diagnosis of dementia and help to access that support.

Cheshire East funding for Jubilee street parties

Cheshire East Council has announced plans for the extended Platinum Jubilee bank holiday celebrations to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 70-year reign.

Her Majesty The Queen is the first British monarch in history to celebrate a platinum jubilee, having acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952 after the death of her father King George VI, when just 25 years old.

To help with the celebrations across the borough, Cheshire East Council is providing a community fund to allow residents to apply for up to £120 for street parties or similar community events.

More information and how to apply for the Queen’s Jubilee community fund can be found on the council’s website at: www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/queensjubilee along with guidance on managing events safely.

Councillor Mick Warren, Cheshire East Council’s committee chair for communities, said: “This Platinum Jubilee is an amazing milestone and one which marks 70 years of unparalleled public service by Her Majesty The Queen.

“Whether you are attending a local street party, planting a tree for the Jubilee as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy or involved with the Platinum Jubilee Beacons, it really is a once in a lifetime celebration and opportunity for all of our residents and communities to come together to mark this historic occasion.”

Public Realm Consultation

Following the consultation on the public realm proposals for Alsager, the Town Council has approved further exploratory work to be undertaken by the working group and council committees.

The objectives of the proposed scheme are to:

· Increase footfall within the town centre – to keep it as a vibrant hub

· To make the town safer and more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists

· Improve the attractiveness of the town

· Ensure people know what the town has to offer

The poor state of the roads and pavements were raised by a large proportion of residents which aligns with aspirations in the Neighbourhood Plan. Eighty businesses commented on the requirement to resurface the roads and pavements in Alsager in a survey carried out by the Town Centre Manager.

Covid ambassadors helping to keep the Moorlands safe

Every action counts as we all work together to protect each other from the spread of coronavirus – and in the Moorlands our Covid Ambassadors are playing a key role in supporting local businesses to ensure they are operating safely.

Since the end of November the Ambassadors, employed by the District Council and its Alliance partner High Peak Borough Council to cover both areas, have carried out over 450 inspection visits with 90% of businesses visited showing high levels of compliance.

Council Leader, Councillor Sybil Ralphs, said: “It’s really great that we’ve seen such high levels of compliance with the guidelines and requirements that are in place to keep us all safe and I’d like to thank residents and businesses for their ongoing commitment to following the rules.

“These results show the fantastic response from local businesses who have been at the forefront of managing the impacts of the health pandemic and I commend them for all the work they have done and continue to do keep everyone safe.

“They are being supported by our Ambassadors who are a key part of our collective efforts and are doing a great job in assisting local businesses to ensure they are operating in a Covid secure manner.

“Their role is particularly important at this time because, even though we are in lockdown, the virus is still very much circulating in our communities so it’s critical that we all do what we can to try and slow and stop it spreading.”

As well as working closely with businesses, the Ambassadors can advise members of the public with any concerns they may have about breaches. Members of the public can report any concerns via the Council’s website:

www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk/ContactEnvironmentalHealth

The number of people testing positive remains at very high levels across the country so it’s more important than ever that we all stick to the rules to keep ourselves and those we love safe.

Councillor Ralphs added: “Now more than ever it’s critical that we stay at home as much as possible and, when we do go out for essential reasons, we must all keep our distance from others, wear a face covering where required and wash our hands frequently.

“Our businesses and Ambassadors are working together to give us confidence that we can shop safely but we all have to do our bit to slow and stop the spread of the virus.

“If you do need to leave home for work for essential shopping, and you are not displaying Covid symptoms, that also means getting tested regularly. The testing centre is now up and running at Biddulph Leisure Centre to enable you to do this – just book a slot online.

“The vaccine roll out offers us hope of brighter days to come but, for now, let’s remember that our actions count and do what we can to take care of ourselves and those we care about. Stay safe.”

Car parking and local transport review includes Alsager

Cheshire East Council are proposing major changes to the management of their car parks and have carried out a parking review and public consultation.

They are conducting this engagement on local transport and parking to inform the future direction, infrastructure requirements and parking provision and charges for our town centres. These factors will be balanced against the vitality plans of town centres.

As town centres are currently facing major challenges as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, setting out a strategic and sustainable approach for local transport and parking will enable the Council to respond to long-term economic and environmental challenges presented by the pandemic and climate change.
