Work starts on Biddulph’s new bowling green

st-lawrenceBowlers in Biddulph can look forward to a brand new green next summer as work starts at St Lawrence Road recreation ground. Bowlers have been without a home since the Labour Club was demolished to make way for the Sainsbury’s development in 2010. The Council has appointed contractors Kettle and Talbot Ltd to construct the pavillion building and works on the car park and Dales Sports Surfaces Ltd who will install the green itself. The new floodlit all weather surface and pavillion will be built on the old tennis courts adjacent to St Lawrence’s Church and the grassed area will remain open to the public along with a footpath to the cemetery. Contractors have already started and expect the whole project to be completed by early summer next year. Councillor Brian Johnson, cabinet member for leisure, sport, parks and countryside, at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council said: “It’s great news that the contractors are on site. The Council is committed to delivering a range of high quality sporting facilities that allow individuals and groups with varied interests to take part in sport and physical activity. This scheme complements the construction of a new multi-use games area, tennis courts and a new playground at Halls Road which is currently under way.”
