The tireless work of the amazing Biddulph in Bloom team has again been rewarded as Biddulph were named winners of the best large town category in the Heart of England region of Britain in Bloom and were again presented with a Gold Award.
The Biddulph in Bloom team, led by the indefatigable councillor Hilda Sheldon MBE, also won the Chairman’s Memorial Trophy for the best floral display. The judges commented on the outstanding displays in Biddulph saying: “The difference that Hilda and her group of dedicated volunteers make to Biddulph becomes apparent as soon as you enter the town. Traffic islands, well maintained and planted, surrounded by colourful barriers and baskets would leave many local authority displays in the shade.”
Other groups who have contributed to Biddulph’s appearance were also mentioned by the judges; “The WI ladies of Greenway Moor deserve a special mention for their outstanding centenary flower bed as do the lovely residents from Moorland Court who have created a vibrant and inspiring communal garden that has enhanced the lives and wellbeing for all that reside there.” Brown Lees and Biddulph Moor also received mention for their first time entrance into the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ competition. On presenting the Mike Garwood Memorial Trophy for the best floral display judges commented: “This bloom town must be the best kept secret of Staffordshire as it has to be seen to be believed. The difference the numerous dedicated groups of volunteers, led by Hilda Sheldon MBE, make from the attractive planted and well-maintained traffic islands to the vast array of colourful barriers and outstanding baskets — it simply blows you away. “We’re not referring to a one off outstanding display, this is a whole town floral experience that is vibrant at every turn and must touch the lives of everyone. Behind every success story is a leader and this one can only best be described as a legend. “Hilda has been driving this campaign with an indomitable spirit for over 24 years, where she ensures that great ideas turn into a reality and nothing is insurmountable. All this, together with the volunteers’ horticulture excellence and attention to detail make Biddulph the very best floral display.” Biddulph go on to the national Britain in Bloom competition, the results of which will be announced in October.
