Biddulph bowling green set to open this summer

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has reassured bowlers in Biddulph that it shares their desire to see the new bowling green and pavilion opened as soon as possible.

As part of its commitment to improving facilities and opportunities for Moorlands residents to take part in a variety of sporting activity, the Council has invested £750,000 in the new amenities which are expected to open this summer as planned. Councillor Brian Johnson, cabinet member with responsibility for sport and leisure at the Council, said: “The Council and Biddulph Bowling and Recreation Club are working together on the terms of lease and we are both keen to conclude matters as soon as possible. Dangerous Discoveries at Biddulph Grange

Residents across the Staffordshire Moorlands are being urged to take part in a consultation about potential sites for housing, employment and other development in the area over the next 15 years.

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has published a long list of possible development sites and is now urging the public to have their say before deciding which sites are the preferred options. The consultation started on Monday 6 July and will run for ten weeks until Monday 14 September to ensure that everyone who wants to get involved has ample opportunity to so. All households and businesses in the Moorlands will receive information about the site options and how to make their views known and the consultation will include drop-in sessions in Biddulph, Blythe Bridge, Cheadle, Kingsley, Leek and Werrington where you can speak to Council officers. Making Space in Biddulph

Staffordshire Moorlands District Council is backing the re-launch of the popular Space scheme by Staffordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Ellis to provide fun activities for young people during the school summer holiday.

Space was originally an activities scheme led by police in Staffordshire during the 80’s and 90’s aimed at engaging with young people. The new version of Space, coordinated by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, has similar objectives and is aimed at 11 and 17 year-olds. The activities have been planned and delivered by a wider collaboration of public and voluntary organisations, including the Police. Mr Ellis has pledged up to £140,000 to fund activities with an aim to increase skills, improve health and general wellbeing by creating opportunities to engage with young people positively. Activities will include sporting events, arts and crafts and music production. The Space scheme will runs until Friday 4 September and will cover areas across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Mr Ellis said: “I am bringing back a new version of Space to provide activities for youngsters during the school holidays. It aims to provide a positive experience for young people and opportunity to engage with public and voluntary sector organisations. The Chief Constable has agreed that neighbourhood policing teams will be at the heart of Space and is enthusiastically behind it.” Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has worked closely with the PCC’s office to organise and plan local Space activities. Alsager Fire Station opening

Alsager’s new Community Fire Station will be officially opened on Friday 7th August 2015 at 11:00am.

The fire station has been built as part of a comprehensive plan to improve response times across Cheshire. Guidelines say firefighters are expected to reach house fires and road accidents within 10 minutes of a 999 call but that was difficult in Alsager because crews were sent from Sandbach or Crewe. Following a major public consultation, a wide-ranging Emergency Response Programme was agreed in principle which involved building some new fire stations which included Alsager. The site in Brookhouse Road was identified to build the new Community Fire Station to speed up reponse times in the locality and a public consultation showed that the vast majority of respondents (95%) supported the plans. Alsager Fire Station will be an on call fire station which means it is staffed by on-call firefighters who will have other main jobs as well. Following recruitment last October 11 crew have been taken on who have been in training on drill nights at Congleton Fire Station and are now ready to start in Alsager.

Alsager woman channels energy for charity swim

Claire Wilson from Alsager is set to swim across the English Channel in August to raise money for The Christies.

Claire is an experienced open water swimmer and used to be a member of Alsager Swimming Club where she was coached by Eric Hawkins. She has been swimming a minimum of 20 kilometers a week since Christmas with as much as 60 kilometers (2400 of a 25m pool) some weeks as part of her training for the grueling ordeal. Claire will make the attempt the week commencing 8th August, weather permitting, to swim the 21 miles (36 kilometers). Under channel swimming rules Claire will be allowed to only wear a swimming costume – wetsuits are not allowed – goggles and swim cap. [Read more…]

Alsager station ‘twins’ with Rose Hill

North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership (NSCRP) launched a new project at Alsager station on Friday 22 May.

Called ‘station twinning’ the project aims to join North Staffordshire Line station volunteers with volunteers from other areas of the rail network to share ideas through reciprocal visits to improve their stations for passengers. Alsager station, on East Midlands Trains Crewe-Derby route, and Rose Hill station, Marple, which provides services to Manchester Piccadilly, were both formerly stations on the old North Staffordshire Railway. The stations’ volunteer teams were also fellow winners at the annual Cheshire Best Kept Stations awards, so had an ideal foundation to be the first station ‘twins’.
