Sainsbury’s get go ahead in Alsager

sainsburysPermission has been granted for the new Sainsbury’s supermarket to be built on the former Twyford’s Bathrooms site off Linley Lane.

The application that split opinion in the village was voted in by 9-0 in favour by Cheshire East planners. Many traders and business fear that the out of town development could be a death knell for the high street but a number of residents and shoppers (up to 90 percent according to some surveys) say they want the extra choice a new supermarket will bring.

Plans for the 25,000 sq ft store include the provision of a new petrol station, a new access road and roundabout off Linley Lane and 300 parking spaces.

The new store will create up to 200 new jobs, which will be a mix of full-time and part-time positions, while the Sainsbury’s Local shop on Alsager’s Crewe Road will remain after the new store is built.

Following the decision the Co-operative store are said to be reviewing their options as they fear that the new store will have an adverse effect on their Alsager store which they have recently refurbished at a cost of over £8 million, with a number of possible job losses.
