Cheshire East are consulting on the introduction of charges for new and replacement bins to save £360,000 a year.
The council say this is because they have been experiencing a high level of bin supply requests with over 20,000 new or replacement bins supplied in the last two years, and this level of demand is placing an unsustainable pressure on the budget and needs to be addressed as they can no longer afford to provide all of the replacement containers free of charge.
The proposed charges will be agreed on an annual basis and is likely to be in the order of: £35 for a standard black residual bin (240 litre), £30 each for recycling and garden waste bins (240 litre), or £25 for a smaller residual bin (140 litre).
The charge will be for the supply of household waste and recycling bins to new properties and replacement containers, where they have been lost, stolen or damaged by a party other than the refuse collectors. Please note for stolen bins: the replacement is free but if further requests are made within 3 years, a charge will apply. A 25% concession will be made for households in receipt of eligible welfare support. Any charges made will contribute to the cost of the supply of new and replacement bins.
The Council claim continuing with a free replacement and new bin supply would, based on current estimates, require over £300,000 per year going forwards. This would mean other services would have to make extra savings on top of ones they already may need to make.

All consultation responses must be received by 21st May 2018, the proposal is to introduce charges during 2018/2019.
