Newcastle Borough Council’s Asset Policy Commmittee have reviewed and recommended a number of sites for disposal in the Borough – including land at Newchapel Road/Pennyfields Road – also known as ‘Chinky Park’.
The Asset Policy Commmittee reviewed 25 sites that meet their definition as ‘surplus to requirements’ as part of their search to raise £4m capital in the next financial year. They produced a short list of 9 that have been recommended for disposal which are considered to be “non-contentious” which includes the land in the Kidsgrove area at Newchapel Road/Pennyfields Road, Gloucester Road and Meadows Road.
The report has proposed that the largest sites be brought forward for immediate consideration and disposal. The land at Newchapel Road/Pennyfields Road was previously removed from development plans in July 2012 following opposition from residents and is still subject to an application for village green status. It is used by a number of youths from the area for recreation and BMX biking where they have built their own tracks, and as recently as November last year they received 10 tonnes of earth from local councillors to help create better facilities. The land would be sold as residential subject to planning with the possibility of up to 148 houses being built and is expected to have a value of over £1million. The report will now go to full Cabinet in February when a final decision will be made regarding the disposal of the assets.
